Many freshmen do gain weight during their first year of college, but it may not be as much as the popular term “Freshman 15” indicates. The cliché “Freshman 15” refers to the phenomenon of how students gain weight due to drastic life style changes. While some students may gain the full 15, most students pack on about 4-8 pounds. Why, you might ask? Freshmen are under a lot of stress (and out from their parents’ watch full eyes) as they adjust from life at home to life on their own. For some, freedom might mean late-night meals, unhealthy snacking at dorm room get-togethers (a Wendys’ Frosty at 3am), cafeteria food buffets, alcohol consumption, and a lack of exercise.
