Testmasters Hosts Math Kangaroo Event

Making Math Fun for Houston-Area Students

3rd Largest National Event puts Students’ Math Skills to the Test

Houston (March 17, 2016) – One hundred sixty Houston-area primary school students put their critical thinking skills to the test today at a math Olympiad designed to develop mathematical knowledge and interest among young students. Testmasters, one of the nation’s leading test preparation authorities, hosted the event at its Houston and Sugar Land locations to address growing demand for math forums, especially for students in first through fifth grades.

After some research, Testmasters selected the Math Kangaroo program. “Testmasters has a natural affinity for math and the type of math problems Math Kangaroo offers,” Testmasters founder and owner Roger Israni said. “Math Kangaroo focuses on math, logic and puzzles – with an emphasis on engaging, fun problems rather than straight computational math.”

The Math Kangaroo Olympiad is an international event held annually on the third Thursday in March. This is the first year Testmasters has hosted a Math Kangaroo competition and is the third-largest Math Kangaroo event in the nation.

“It’s important to nurture learning and enthusiasm for math and science in children when they are very young,” Israni said. “These children are tomorrow’s STEM leaders and we need to give them the tools to build their confidence in their ability to comprehend math and help them understand that math is significant in every part of the world. We want them to have fun with math and learn that it’s okay to be intellectual.”

Participants took a 75-minute test that consisted of 24 multiple-choice questions for students in first-fourth grades and 30 questions for students in fifth-twelfth grades. Each participant received a t-shirt, a certificate of participation, and a toy in addition to a competition booklet and a pencil on the test day.

Testmasters will announce winners at an awards ceremony on May 21. Students will be presented with gold, silver and bronze medals, gift cards, games and books.

Testmasters reached out to students via social media, mom blogs and through some schools. Demand exceeded planned capacity of 160 students. Testmasters donated classroom space and company resources to run the Math Kangaroo Olympiad in Houston and plans to expand capacity in the future.

Testmasters is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2016.
